How Often Should a Gym or Studio Be Cleaned?

6am, first class of the day, and the mats still smell like last night's boxing session. Anyone who has run a gym or studio in Coffs Harbour has had that moment — and it's usually the point where they start asking how often the place actually needs a proper clean, not just a quick wipe-down between classes.

There isn't one answer for every gym. A 24-hour access box with no staff on site has different needs to a boutique Pilates studio with four classes a day. But there is a sensible way to work it out, and a few non-negotiables that apply no matter the size of the place.

Start with what touches skin and sweat

The equipment and surfaces people put their hands, feet and bare skin on need attention every single day the gym is open — sometimes more than once. That includes:

  • Mats, benches and any equipment used for floor work

  • Handles, grips, dumbbells and cable attachments

  • Locker room benches, showers and toilets

  • Reception counters and eftpos terminals

These are high-touch, high-moisture surfaces. Skip a day and members notice — and in a gym, "notice" usually means they stop coming back.

Then think about what builds up over a week

Floors are the other big one. Between spilled water, sweat, chalk and outdoor grit tracked in on shoes, gym floors take a beating that an office floor never sees. Weekly deep attention to floors — not just a daily once-over — keeps odours from settling into the surface, which is a common complaint in studios that only get a light clean each day.

Air quality matters here too. Fans, vents and any soft furnishings (couches in reception, cushions in a stretching area) collect dust and should be part of a weekly rather than daily routine.

What a realistic cleaning frequency looks like

For most Coffs Harbour gyms and studios, that breaks down roughly like this:

  • Daily: high-touch equipment, toilets and showers, bins, mirrors, reception surfaces

  • Several times a week: full floor clean across the whole training area

  • Weekly: deeper attention to vents, soft furnishings, skirting, and anywhere dust and grit settle out of daily reach

Some studios — particularly ones running back-to-back classes with no gaps — end up needing a same-day touch-up as well as an evening clean. That's a conversation worth having when you're scoping the job, because frequency should follow how the space is actually used, not a generic schedule.

Why "after hours" matters more in a gym than almost anywhere else

A gym can't be cleaned properly while people are training in it — mopping around someone's deadlift set doesn't work for anyone. That's why commercial cleans in a gym setting are best run after close, so the space is fully reset before the first class the next day. It also means the clean isn't rushed around member traffic, which is where corners tend to get cut.

The smell test is a warning sign, not a solution

A lot of gym owners judge cleanliness by smell — if it doesn't smell bad, it must be clean enough. The problem is that smell is usually the last thing to show up, after bacteria has already had time to build up on mats and equipment. By the time a space smells off, the cleaning gap has usually existed for a while. Frequency should be set based on usage and touch points, not on whether anyone's complained yet.

A quick way to check if your current frequency is enough

Ask three questions: Are mats and equipment wiped after every class, not just at the end of the day? Is there a consistent floor clean at least every second day? And can you tell, just by looking, that today's clean actually happened — or are you taking it on faith? If the answer to any of those is no, it's worth reviewing what's in the current scope.

Getting the scope right from the start

The most reliable gyms we work with didn't guess at a frequency — they scoped the space properly first, worked out what needed daily attention versus weekly, and built a schedule around that. It's a more useful starting point than picking a frequency off a price list.

If you're weighing up how often your gym or studio actually needs cleaning, our gym cleaning page covers what a proper scope looks like, or you can see how we approach commercial sites more broadly on our commercial cleaning page.
